“The Soyouz-54 program was launched in an emergency following early combat reports showing an unacceptable level of losses. While powerful at long-range, the Soyouz-52 was proven to be vulnerable to short-range attacks. In order to remedy to this situation, the engineers from Mykoyan chose the simple option of installing a turret mounted medium railgun for self-defense as well as a 5cm armor plate on the aft engine section. This however came at the expense of the battery section which had to be reduced significantly in size to accommodate the magazine and fire control suit of the railgun.Truth be told, these measures are at best a stop gap but the crews of the fleet will have to make do with them until a true successor to the 52 is found.”
